Medical Specialists

Dr Ranjini Rao is a Consultant Psychiatrist with expertise in general adult psychiatry, substance misuse and addiction psychiatry, and adult ADHD. She completed her medical degree in India in 2002, and undertook her psychiatry training in the United Kingdom, including advanced certification in Addiction Psychiatry.

Ranjini spent eight years as a Consultant Psychiatrist with the Specialist Substance Misuse Service in the UK, developing extensive expertise in the integrated care of complex patients with co-occurring mental illness and addiction. She was closely involved in shaping addiction service provision and policy with the Welsh Assembly Government, served as elected Chair of the Addictions Faculty of the Wales Royal College of Psychiatrists, and was elected a Fellow of the College in 2020. She has also served as a Health Associate and Supervisor for the UK General Medical Council, and held academic and training roles including Program Director for Adult Psychiatry Training at Prince Philip Hospital and College Tutor for Aneurin Bevan Health Board.

Since relocating to Australia and attaining Fellowship of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists in 2021, Ranjini has practised as a Consultant Psychiatrist with Barwon Health’s Mental Health and Specialist Pain services, and holds the position of Deputy Clinical Director in Mental Health at Grampians Health. She is also the Local Director of Psychiatry Training at Barwon Health and an Affiliate Senior Lecturer with Deakin University’s School of Medicine.

At The Geelong Clinic, Ranjini provides inpatient and outpatient assessment and management for patients with mental illness. She takes a pragmatic, collaborative and holistic approach to patient care, underpinned by open and honest communication with referrers, patients and their families.
